As the only candidate with K-12 experience, I bring a diverse set of skills that enhance my qualifications for school board.
When thinking about the impact an educator can have upon students and families, one specific experience comes to mind. A number of the students I taught also received special education services. Because I also speak Spanish, I provided interpreter services between the family and the school during the annual review of a student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
As a trusted member of the educational team, I conveyed the family’s perspective and input to the IEP review team, while explaining to the family the support and services their child would receive. By amplifying the parents’ voices in advocating for services their child needed and deserved, they communicated their questions, concerns, and feedback to the educational team serving their child.
Through this process, I effectively bridged the gap to ensure the family’s voice was heard, valued, and respected.
As a result, the IEP team strengthened their partnership with the family in promoting an academic environment in which their child could thrive.
Bridging the gap between the community and the schools is a key role school board members play. I am committed to listening to families with empathy and objectivity. As underscored in my experience in education, I will take those concerns and adequately communicate them to school leadership to appropriately address.
As a parent with three children in Oakwood Schools, an active community member, and a former educator, I am aware of the needs and opportunities for students and families to thrive, passionate about serving the community and preserving a legacy of excellence, and experienced in K-12 education and addressing district needs.
I have a demonstrated history of collaboration and empathy to invite all voices and perspectives, drive collective decision-making, and seek creative solutions to achieve goals that best support our students through district-wide programs and organizational strategy.
