Prior to joining the race for school board, I naturally began to reflect on my role as a parent with three elementary-age children in the district, my skillset and expertise as an educator and administrator, and the experience I could contribute to the board, our schools, and Oakwood’s legacy of excellence. I also bring a unique perspective and lived experience to the community.
I am the first out candidate running for a seat on the Oakwood School Board, that I know of or in recent times.
As an openly gay man, I am proud to call Oakwood my home. Whether it’s a walk through the neighborhood with my soon-to-be husband or our family bike ride to one of the beautiful parks, I can’t help but appreciate seeing so many allies and fellow LGBTQIA+ residents along the way. When I see a Pride flag or one of the many inclusive signs residents place in their yards, it serves as a welcoming signal to people like me, my fiance, my children, and so many others who live in our community. These signals let us know we’re safe to be here – that we’re safe to be who we are.
Many community members have welcomed us with open arms – and it’s been extremely refreshing. It’s this same commitment to welcoming and creating a safe environment that I seek to extend to others. As a candidate for Oakwood School Board, it’s this same commitment that I will bring to our students, teachers, school district staff, and community at large. For these reasons and more, I’m proud to be the first publicly out candidate running for school board.
Wednesday October 11th is National Coming Out Day, which is one of the many ways we can recognize, honor, and celebrate the unique strengths, talents, and assets our students provide to the community. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I understand the value of diversity and the importance of having diverse representation of voices, experiences, and perspectives. I am keenly aware of the complexities involved in appropriately supporting district needs and effectively equipping learners with what they need to learn, grow, and thrive.
My perspective and skillset, coupled with my education experience, my dedication, and role as a parent of three children in Oakwood Schools have equipped me with the expertise to follow through on my commitments to serving on the school board. I am all in for all students and eager to devote my time and expertise in service to Oakwood Schools.
